New is Now is a long term project that I created in the year 2020. It is currently in its early stages but it is growing at a fast rate, gathering sponsorship and support from financial trusts. The idea behind the project is simple: to connect school orchestras with composers, thereby bringing new music directly into schools and the lives of young children.
New is Now doesn't take the form of a simple composition commission that is delivered by the composer and then taught in the school, but rather asks of a more active role from the composer. They attend the rehearsals and engage with the children as the piece is being studied over a long period of time. They react and respond to any questions and ideas the children may have. The composition is tailored to fit the level of the orchestra and in many cases the level of the individual child.
Through this process, new music becomes something vital and alive to the children. It is something that is active and connected to a person that they meet and can talk to. Most importantly the children realize that they too play a role in the creation of new music.
This project offers composers the chance to engage with the musical fabric of society in a meaningful and sustainable way. They can bring new music directly to a younger generation, and take responsibility for nourishing the roots of the music scene they ultimately wish to profit from.

Now
New is Now ist ein langfristiges Projekt, das ich 2020 startete. Das Projekt befindet sich gerade in der Anfangsphase, aber es breitet sich schon schnell durch die finanzielle Unterstützung von Stiftungen aus. Mit dem Projekt setzt man Schulorchester (und damit die Schüler*innen selbst) direkt in Kontakt mit der Neuen Musik und mit dem Komponisten. Die Schüler haben die Möglichkeit, Neue Musik hautnah zu erleben, indem sie es selber spielen.
New is Now umfasst die Uraufführung und Erarbeitung eines neuen Orchesterwerks, das für das Schulorchester komponiert wird. Bei ausgewählten Proben wird der Komponist anwesend sein, um die Schüler zu unterstützen und um Fragen über das Stück, die neue Aufführungspraxis und über die Neue Musik im Allgemeinen zu beantworten. Es ist natürlich dabei wichtig, dass die neu komponierte Musik das richtige Niveau hat, damit die Kinder herausgefordert werden können, ohne überfordert zu sein. Demzufolge sollte der Komponist das Werk dem Niveau des Orchesters gut anpassen.
Als Komponist vermittelt man die Begeisterung und die Neugier an neuen Klängen - beide Eigenschaften, die all zu oft später verlernt werden können. Die Musik wird zu etwas Lebendigem und Aktuellem und wird für sie nicht etwas Abstraktes, das man übt, ohne dem Komponisten jemals zu begegnen.
Durch das Projekt können die Komponisten, die von der Musikszene profitieren wollen, gleichzeitig an der Ernährung und Weitervermittlung dessen Szene teilhaben.

Little Symphony
The First Step
"Little Symphony" was the first step in the umbrella project of New is Now It was funded by the Claussen-Simon-Stiftung and was in cooperation with the Orchestra of the Kaifu School in Hamburg,under the direction of Katja Prante.
"Little Symphony" war der erste Schritt des größeren Projektes New is Now. Dieser Schritt wurde von der Claussen-Simon-Stiftung gefördert. Das Projekt fand mit der Zusammenarbeit des Kaifu Gymnasiums Hamburg statt und das Stück wurde für das Schulorchester komponiert. Das Orchester war unter der Leitung von Katja Prante.
Marlene (Klavier): „Außergewöhnlich und abwechslungsreich. Nicht so langweilig nur auf den Tasten.“
Marlene (Blockflöte): „Es war gut, dass er uns angeschaut hat und es so geschrieben hat, dass es zu uns passt.“
Johann: „Gut, dass der Komponist da war.“
Sofia: „Hector hat sehr gut erklärt, was wir machen sollten. Das ganze Projekt hat viel Spaß gemacht.
